James Nachtwey was born in 1948 in Syracuse, New York. However he moved to and grew up in Massachusetts. He then graduated from Dartmouth College, where he studied Art History and Political Science. Growing up, ome of the most influential images Nachtwey saw were pictures from the Vietnam War and the American Civil Rights movement, which led Nachtwey to become a self-taught photographer. Afterwards, he worked on ships in the Merchant Marine, where he became an apprentice news film editor while working as a truck driver. Nachtwey moved to New Mexico and in 1976, he worked for a New Mexico newspaper for four years before moving to New York City, joining Time the prestigious magazine.
